Leadership
Leadership is for all people.
I have been a Toastmaster for 13 years. I am unashamedly a dedicated 'Toastie'. Toastmasters is the first port of call for anyone wanting to improve their communication and leadership skills. This is because it has an ethos that encourages the traits of a good leader in everyone. Each person
has a capacity, if matched by desire, to develop their leadership capacities and skills.
Leadership is leadership - a way of looking at life –
an attitude foremost. It is not a position of placement but a position in the way we live. It is an approach to successful living.
Leadership
asks you to make sure that other people matter. I have seen more leadership awareness in young teenagers than I have in some of our so-called leaders. It bothers me that many teachers in schools that I visit do not see themselves as leaders first. I am amazed at the way there is a big management push in the workplace without the corresponding development of leadership qualities.
Workplace bullying is a huge issue and dose not seem to be decreasing. In fact bullying overall seems to be increasing and lately cyber bullying has left young 11 year olds, in fear as peers use social networking sites to bullt classmates.
My passion is yet to manifest in print form and other ways but for now I liek to express how much it means in workshops and playshops (much more fun).
Workshops for Toastmasters and management groups that I have delivered include:
- Working with Volunteers
- The 'Lego' (building) Blocks of Leadership
- The Catwalk of Leadership
- The Different Hats of Team Leadership
- Sober But Under the Influence (persuasion techniques)
- In the Middle but Feeling on Top (school registrars)
- Fuelling the Intrinsic Engine (identifying best practice in HR management
All workshops can be tailored for small or large groups, and flexible enough
to suit your specific group. Coaching techniques are utilised to
facilitate greater creative thinking. Follow up sessions for the group
or individuals can be arranged.

With my passion for real leadership I have developed programs for young people, to make that difference in the world that many of us often talk about.
Youth Leadership Development
Step Forward is especially created for Year 6 students and year 7s
Leading Alongside is for years 8 to 12 students.
The objectives are to encourage leadership through understanding some basic
leadership precepts and qualities in an environment in which students are encouraged to speak about those qualities and
give their views, confidently.
In so doing, young people are spirited to be more
self-responsible, see more choices, be decisive, develop the notion of
unconditional respect for others and achieve more of what they want to
achieve while leading and supporting others to do the same.
We offer the chance for students to seek their own solutions and answers by seeing how the 'right' question makes a difference.
We combine coaching approaches, teaching technique,
and training principles to affect the greatest learning.
Coaching encourages
ownership of the learning by initiating thought processes that categorize
discovery learning.
We acknowledge the need as it arises, for didactic and
informative guidance to improve learning outcomes. Call (03) 5998 4932 or email penny@capacitylifecoaching.com.au and visit http://www.sagacityservices.com.aufor more information.
More on Leadership...
Leadership is often required at
the smallest committee level, just as much as at the highest corporate
and governmental post. The extent to which others are encouraged to
have an attitude to lead can be a test of true leadership. The
political leaders who fail to train for succession can leave groups bereft
of leadership when they get the boot! The same goes for the
corporate giant who falls prey to all manner of physical or emotional
misfortune. The
world needs great leaders. Pressing issues continue to be created and to
be resolved. Democracy encourages all of us to take responsibility and
not leave leadership to a select group or an elected few. This is not a
political statement. It is a comment about self-responsibility and self-empowerment.
Building
leadership skill and understanding, develops confidence, increases
communication and raises productivity.
Taking the lead is not about
upstaging or domination, but about support, encouragement and decision
making.
Life does not have to be complicated; nor does leadership. Working with many ordinary adults in Toastmasters how simple leadership brings out the best in people.
